Microorganisms are tiny organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They are classified into four major groups:

  • Bacteria

  • Protozoa

  • Algae

  • Note: Viruses  are also considered microscopic but reproduce only inside host cells.

2. Beneficial Microorganisms: Our Friends

Microorganisms play a crucial role in our daily lives and the environment:

  • Food Production: Lactobaccilus bacteria help in the formation of curd from milk.

  • Agriculture: Rhizobium bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, increasing soil fertility.

  • Medicine: Fungi and bacteria are used to produce Antibiotics (like Penicillin) and Vaccines.

  • Environment: They act as decomposers, breaking down organic waste and maintaining the ecological balance.

3. Harmful Microorganisms: Our Foes

While many are helpful, some microorganisms cause diseases in humans, plants, and animals:

  • Pathogens: Disease-causing microorganisms are called pathogens.
