BSE Odisha Class 8 Science Chapter 8: Force and Pressure (ବଳ ଓ ଚାପ)
Mastering the concepts of Force and Pressure is the key to understanding how the physical world works. At Odisha Board Solutions, we provide simplified, stepwise answers for Class 8 Science Chapter 8, updated for the 2026-27 curriculum. Whether it is understanding atmospheric pressure or the types of forces, we’ve got you covered.
1. What is Force? (ବଳ କ’ଣ?)
A push or a pull on an object is called a force. Force can change the state of motion (speed or direction) or the shape of an object.
Types of Forces (ବଳର ପ୍ରକାରଭେଦ):
-
Contact Forces (ସଂସ୍ପର୍ଶ ବଳ): Forces that act only when objects are in physical contact.
-
Muscular Force: Using our muscles to lift a bag.
-
Frictional Force: The force that slows down a rolling ball.
-
-
Non-Contact Forces (ଅସଂସ୍ପର୍ଶ ବଳ): Forces that act without physical contact.
-
Magnetic Force: Magnets attracting iron nails.
-
Electrostatic Force: A charged comb attracting bits of paper.
-
Gravitational Force: The Earth pulling objects toward its center.
-
2. Understanding Pressure (ଚାପ)
Pressure is the force acting on a unit area of a surface. The relationship is shown by the formula:
-
Why do tools have sharp edges? Since pressure is inversely proportional to area, a smaller area (sharp edge) exerts more pressure, making it easier to cut.
-
Pressure in Liquids & Gases: Liquids and gases exert pressure on the walls of their containers.
3. Atmospheric Pressure (ବାୟୁମଣ୍ଡଳୀୟ ଚାପ)
The envelope of air around the earth is known as the atmosphere. The pressure exerted by this air is known as atmospheric pressure.
-
Note: We don’t feel this immense pressure because the pressure inside our bodies is equal to the atmospheric pressure and cancels it out.
